A Quick Chat with Rodaidh McDonald
Ahead of the pop panel, where four musicians come together to create a pop song, we spoke to the producer of the xx’s album, Rodaidh McDonald.
The Creators Project: Hello Rodaidh. What is it you are doing here tonight?
Rodaidh McDonald: Well, me and three other people are taking part in something called The Pop Panel. We will be answering a load of questions and making a track together live from scratch. We have Jammer and Sampha, the two vocalists. I have worked with Sampha a few times before, but Jammer only once, briefly.
How do you think it will go?
I have no idea. I am sure it will be OK.
What would you describe your day-to-day work as?
Well, I work for a record label and run a studio where I record, mix and produce music. Some of the main things I have done this year were, I suppose, the xx album that I helped out with. I also did some mixing for the Horrors, Gil Scott Heron, and Vampire Weekend.
What did you do with the new Gil Scott Heron album?
Well, it was produced in a few different places. The producer Richard and I did some additional mixing and production on the album extras.
What sort of programs do you tend to use on a daily basis?
I mainly use Logic and Pro Tools. I was familiar with them for some time before I started at the label. I just taught myself how to use them.
What do you think of The Creators Project?
It is really exciting – the line-up looks great. All the collaborations sound promising.
Do you think it benefits the artists as well as the public?
To be able to give artists a platform like this to do something original, and exhibit it alongside other artists that they might not normally be associated with, or who might not even work in a similar area, is amazing. I think it is as much of a benefit to those involved as those who get to see it.
