Moritz Waldemeyer and His LED Throne
Giving us a working demonstration, Moritz Waldemeyer talked us through By Royal Appointment, an LED-studded throne that changes colour according to the colour of the clothes worn by whoever is sitting on the chair, creating a kind of regal ambience around the person.
The Creators Project: What made you decide to create this throne?
Moritz Waldemeyer: I developed it in response to a brief to create a space for a party. So I thought about Louis XIV, who probably held the ultimate parties in his court. He would sit on his throne and everything would revolve around him. So I had this idea about his aura commanding this space, and wanted to do this installation which lights up the entire room. So you would sit in this chair and the entire room would change colour. But the project got cancelled, so I turned the idea into just one chair.
So does fashion interest you as much as design?
Well, my favourite thing about the fashion world is the energy. It’s almost like the design world, but on steroids – everything happens so much faster. But also in the end it’s a little bit disappointing because once you have created something it just moves on to the next thing. So it remains quite superficial, but the energy is at the same time as intoxicating as it is disappointing.
What has been your favourite thing here today?
I think I like the collection of people this has attracted. It feels very special. It’s a set of people who are very creative and forward-looking. It feels like we’re here – this is the future, you know? It’s a very optimistic feel. There is often a very pessimistic view of the future and this feels optimistic, which is why I like it.
