Visually Stunning Cathedral Made From 55,000 LEDs
After Alain de Botton’s proposal of a minimalist black tower as a temple for atheists, it’s probably best that he doesn’t try to compete with Belgium’s Luminarie De Cagna, featured at Ghent Light Festival held in the Belgium city from 26 to 29 January. A colonnade is transformed into a cathedral of light using 55,000 LEDs with Romanesque and Renaissance architecture-inspired arches and an entrance that’s 28 metres high. And if you’re thinking this magical fairyland of wonder is a waste of electricity, it only consumes 20Kwatt/h.
With new technologies and creative thinking, artists can really amp up the awe factor when using light as a medium, like the light festival held in Durham, England last year, UVA’s alien-looking neon cube (which toured our events in 2011), and Bruce Munro’s Field of Light to name just three.
