We Really Are Close Now
And so The Creators Project London event is now officially open for business. Well, nearly. The UK press have descended, to be the first men and women in the country to experience the Creators’ work and to question Mark Ronson, Vice co-founder Shane Smith, Trevor Jackson and John Galvin of Intel.
The panel spoke about the inaugural New York party, the plans for tomorrow’s London event, swapped memories of drinking in New York bars, and proselytised about the expansive, inclusive nature of The Creators Project. Mark and Trevor spoke about the The Creators Project bringing together artists for unlikely creative collaborations; as Shane put it: “It’s a 2010 rave version of the Paris salons.”
Here are some excerpts from the Q&A between the panel and the press.
How did you go about selecting the artists for the project?Shane: It was a long process that evolved over time; it started with a long list of people. One of the things we knew we wanted from the start was a cross-section of artists across multiple disciplines. But the list just grew organically, Creators suggested other Creators and it evolved that way.
What do you hope to achieve? What are your long term goals?
John: This first year we just wanted to bring the project out and get it known. But next year we’ll expand our footprint and bring new Creators in. The goal is to get people to think about technology differently. We want to show people you can do more with technology than just watch videos and surf online; you can use it as a tool to create.
How are the events tailored to each city?
Shane: Mainly the events will feature different exhibits depending on which city we’re in, but some pieces come with us. Radical Friend’s The Digital Flesh is travelling to all the events, as well as living online, and it’ll end with a shamanic séance in Beijing. Space is a concern when moving these things around, though, as the installations take up lots of it. Next year we’re thinking of having the events in a museum, because that’s the sort of space we need – somewhere large.
So that’s it for today. We’ll see you all tomorrow, when we’ll be running around and blogging throughout the day and night.
